Description
(Hibiscus tiliaceus) 3 verities
USDA Zone Zones 9–11. In Central Florida, Sea Hibiscus thrives outdoors year‑round and tolerates salt air well, making it perfect for coastal bonsai collections.
Sun Requirements Prefers full sun to bright filtered light. More sun produces tighter internodes and smaller leaves, essential for Shohin proportion.
Watering & Salt Tolerance High water demand; keep soil evenly moist. Excellent salt tolerance, among the best of tropical bonsai species, suitable for seaside environments.
Fertilizer Use a balanced fertilizer during active growth and a phosphorus‑rich blend when encouraging flowering. Sea Hibiscus responds strongly to organic feeds and frequent light applications.
Repotting Repot every 1–2 years in late spring or early summer. Trim roots lightly—Shohin specimens recover quickly in warm weather. Use a well‑draining tropical mix with added pumice or coarse sand.
