Workshop 5 – Cedar Elm

$120.00

Sergio Cuan – May 24 Sunday – 9am – 12:30pm

Cedar Elm is one of the most reliable North American species for small‑scale bonsai. It backbuds aggressively, develops fine ramification, and naturally produces small leaves that reduce even further under training. Its rugged bark and strong taper give Shohin compositions an aged, expressive character in a compact size.

Description

(Ulmus crassifolia)

USDA Zone Zones 6–9. Fully hardy in Central Florida; no winter protection required.

Sun Requirements Prefers full sun for tight internodes and small leaves. Tolerates partial sun but performs best with strong light, especially when developing Shohin ramification.

Watering & Salt Tolerance Moderate water needs; prefers evenly moist soil but tolerates brief dry periods. High salt tolerance, making it well suited for coastal environments like Indialantic.

Fertilizer Responds well to regular feeding. Use a balanced fertilizer during the growing season; reduce nitrogen slightly in late summer to encourage tighter growth and smaller leaves.

Repotting Repot every 2–3 years in early spring as buds begin to swell. Cedar Elm tolerates root pruning well and adapts to most bonsai substrates with good drainage.
