Workshop 4 – Willow Leaf Ficus

$85.00

Jesus Brito – May 23 Saturday – 1:30pm – 5pm

Willow‑Leaf Ficus is one of the most responsive and rewarding tropical species for small‑scale bonsai. Its naturally narrow leaves, fast growth, and strong backbudding make it ideal for tight ramification and refined Shohin silhouettes. It tolerates heavy pruning, wiring, and shaping, making it excellent for both beginners and advanced tropical stylists.

Description

Ficus salicaria

USDA Zone Zones 10–11. In Central Florida, it thrives outdoors most of the year and only needs protection during rare cold snaps below 40°F.

Sun Requirements Prefers full sun to bright partial sun. Strong light encourages smaller leaves, tighter internodes, and vigorous backbudding—key traits for Shohin refinement.

Watering & Salt Tolerance Moderate to high water needs; prefers evenly moist soil and warm, humid conditions. High salt tolerance, making it well suited for coastal environments like Indialantic.

Fertilizer A fast grower that responds well to regular feeding. Use a balanced fertilizer throughout the growing season; organic options help maintain steady, controlled growth suitable for Shohin scale.

Repotting Repot every 1–2 years in late spring or early summer. Willow‑Leaf Ficus tolerates aggressive root pruning and adapts well to standard tropical bonsai mixes.
