BSF Convention Workshops
This year’s workshops should be really good. Ryan Neil personally checked on the black pines and Shimpaku junipers. Since he will be conducting the workshops, you can be assured that he selected good material. Anyone participating in the escambron, elm or shimpaku workshops should arrive a few minutes early to preview the trees, as selection will be made by registration number. This way you will be sure to have the tree of your choice, the same as last year, but even better since you will have the opportunity to personally look over all the trees first.
Workshop #1: Hands on Bonsai Display This should be exciting and educating watching Ryan, Peter and Dora assemble the exhibit and explain how and why they make their selections. ALMOST SOLD OUT!! LIMITED SPACES STILL AVAILABLE!
Workshop #2: Escambron is a tropical from Puerto Rico and has very small leaves. There are 3 sizes to choose from. These trees just came out of the greenhouse and will be nice and full by the end of May. Actually now is a good time to look over the structure of the trees. Mike Feduccia travels regularly to study with Ryan Neil and is familiar with the material.
Workshop #3: Black Pine Go to the website to view the pictures, the green marker is 1” wide, so you can see that the base of the pines is over 2” in diameter and remember that Ryan selected these trees including his demonstration tree. They are priced separately in addition to the workshop fee.
Workshop #4: Bring Your Own Tree This is self-explanatory, you bring a tree that you want Ryan’s guidance to help you style and create a fine bonsai and make the most of its potential.
Workshop #5 & #8: Companion Plants/ Kusamono One of these workshops is a must if you want to properly display your tree. Kora’s demonstrations at 2011 Joy of Bonsai were outstanding and her workshops were sold out. She travels frequently to Japan and selects the special pots that she uses in her presentations. WORKSHOP #5 SOLD OUT
Workshop #6: Shimpaku Ryan has been trying to obtain good pictures of these trees. They finally sent one that shows some trunk detail. They are 12 to 15 inches high and the trunk diameter is 1.5 to 20”. He has seen them and says that they are very good, but it is hard to penetrate the dense foliage and show much of the trunk detail.SOLD OUT
Workshop #7: Chinese Elm The workshop committee selected these trees, they have nice taper and branching and should develop into a bonsai worthy of addition to any collection. The committee is trying to obtain some pictures to show the high quality of these trees.
