Dorothy Schmitz is a professional full time bonsai artist from Southwest Florida with a Southern European origin.
Dorothy started in bonsai 5 years ago, was elected twice among the national finalists of the New Talent Competition, won the open Florida BSF Instructor Scholarship Award in 2005 and the coveted Ben Oki Award in 2006. She is presently a member of the Bonsai Society of Southwest Florida, Treasure Coast Bonsai Society, Vice president of the Naples Shohin and Bonsai Society, member of ABS and BCI, and District Trustee for the Bonsai Societies of Florida (BSF).
Dorothy is an active editor at the Knowledge of Bonsai Forum and the Art of Bonsai Project and owns a Bonsai Studio in Bonita Springs together with her partner in Life Ernie Fernandez.
She specializes in conifers and tropicals, as well as in carving with hand and power tools.
Her goal is to actively support Saburo Kato’s idea of bonsai ‘no kokoro’ worldwide and to help further develop the quality and the public acceptance of bonsai as an art form in the US.
