On January 18, 19 and 20, Kawa Bonsai will have its sixth annual Joy of Bonsai. Featured artists are Jose’ Luis Rodriguez Macias, from Puerto Rico, and Sean Smith, from Pennsylvania, as well as Florida’s own Mike Rogers and Mike Cartrett.
Jose’ is a student of Cheng Cheng-Kung of China, who will be BSF’s headliner for the 2008 Convention. Cheng is a master carver in the si-diao or “silk carving” technique. Jose’ has been studying his technique for years.
Sean Smith, a master woodworker, as well as bonsai artist, will be doing a workshop on Tanuki or Phoenix Graft and, for the first time, presenting a program on building your own Tokonoma.
The cost for the program is $10 for either Saturday or Sunday and $15 for both days. The program Friday night, by Sean Smith, called the “Art of Display” is a separate cost of $4 which is waved if you are taking the Tokonoma workshop. Refreshments will be served that evening.
Besides workshops and continuous demonstrations, there will be Kawa’s juried exhibit of member’s trees, vendors and refreshments will be available.
The show will be at the Flagler County Extension Office on
