News from Bonsai Society of Brevard
In 2006 the Bonsai Society of Brevard began a great relationship with the Brevard Zoo, located in Melbourne. The zoo turned over to the club a prime spot within the zoo on which to build a permanent bonsai display. Since then thousands of visitors have seen the display and the comments to the zoo management have been so enthusiastic that the zoo and our club have teamed to put on an annual bonsai display patterned after the BSF convention.
One Nov. 10-11, in the zoo’s brand-new conference center on the zoo grounds, our club will have its annual bonsai display.
In previous years the annual display was held at a local commercial nursery, but with the ribbon-cutting on the new conference center at the zoo, we quickly accepted the zoo’s offer for us to hold our annual event in what can only be described as a “perfect” venue. The building has ample room for a large tree display (similar to the BSF convention display) an area for a number of vendors, a large area for demonstrations/lectures, a kitchen for preparation of food and beverages, and best of all, literally hundreds of visitors passing by our doors during the weekend.
We are going “all-out” to make our inaugural show at this venue be “one to remember”. We will have a display of approximately 50 of Florida’s finest bonsai, several vendors who will be emphasizing “finished bonsai” for sale, along with the usual assortment of bonsai tools, pots, wire, and pre-bonsai. We will also have demonstrations/lectures, raffle tables, and refreshments for visitors.
We invite all BSF member clubs to pay us a visit during the event. The zoo hours are 9:30-5:00 both days and admission to the zoo is $10.50 for Adults, $9:50 for Seniors, $7.50 for Children (2-12) and free for younger children. After entrance to the zoo, admission to the bonsai display is free. The zoo is located at 8225 N. Wickham Rd, Melbourne. For additional information please contact Gene Howell (321) 255-4064.
